Mutazione is an adventure game where the juicy personal drama is just as important as the high-stakes adventure part of the story.
During the course of this project at Die Gute Fabrik I had diverse tasks while working closely with all other disciplines. One of my main responsibilities was researching, prototyping and implementing PlayStation 4 specific features, e.g. saving game data, creating and exporting custom screenshots and sharing custom content with friends and on social networks.
Another big part of my role as a programmer was working on different parts of the UI and the input system. This includes the game’s UI hub and menus, the journal, which displays story clues depending on the players’ progress, the encyclopedia, which is dynamically loaded from a spreadsheet, and reusable systems for menus and grids.
My interest in learning new things and interdisciplinary work were especially helpful when I lead the development of one of Mutazione’s upcoming updates (“Penpal Mode”) and for implementing various tools for Unity and Adobe Animate to support our artists’ workflow. Further I provided assistance where it was needed, whether it was QA and build support, bug fixing or administrative work.
Mutazione was released on Apple Arcade, PlayStation 4 and PC. It is the most nominated game of the IGF awards 2020, for in total four categories – Excellence in Visual Art, Audio and Narrative, as well as the Seumas McNally Grand Prize.
